That was actually a progression.
First they used retarded german titles that did not have anything to do with the film (e.g. "Satanas - Schloss der blutigen Bestie" for "The Masque of the Red Death"), then they graduated to using the original title with a german subtitle (e.g. Payback - Zahltag), and then they started giving them english titles different from the original one (e.g. "48 Hours" for "Taken").
I personally hate the last one because it's so utterly unnecessary and retarded, but then again it fits with the absolute state of modern translators/localizers. Those people have forgotten how to speak german while simultaneously not being able to speak proper english. See also: All kinds of marketing and advertisement shit.
Or take the show "Ghosts", which is called "Ghosts" in all its adaptations. Sure, calling it "Geister" might be not possible because the Lars von Trier miniseries from the 90s is already called that, but I would even prefer something like "Die total verspukte Geistervilla" to "Ghosts".
